Lappeeranta University of Tech
Lappeeranta University of Technology [LUT] is a founding science university in Finland, established in 1969. It has 2 campuses, one in the city of Lappeenranta, south-eastern Finland, about 19 miles from the Russian border, and the 2nd one in Lahti.
LUT is a university where curiosity meets courage, where every student aims at inspiring other students. The student community in the University is known for its ambitious and encouraging nature, helping to create a better society for the world.
Since 2014 LUT University has been ranked among the world’s top 600 universities (Times Higher Education and QS rankings) as well as one of the world's 20 most promising and rapidly developing challenger universities (a report by the Firetail consulting firm).
There are about 930 staff members and 7000 students and experts engaged in scientific research and academic education. LUT awards 5 Bachelor’s, 22 Master’s [many of them internationally accredited] and Doctoral degrees, all of them in English. Their Master's programme in International Marketing Management was awarded EFMD`s EPAS-accreditation for five years in 2012. LUT also has EUR-ACE and ASIIN-accredited programmes in Chemical, Mechanical, electrical engineering, Energy and Environmental Technologies, and Industrial Management. LUT attracts students from across the world to their internationally acclaimed International Master's programmes in Technology and Business Administration and bachelor’s programme in Technology. LUT’s Business Administration program concentrates on sustainable value creation by promoting innovations and continuous renewal. Every year, nearly 300 new degree students begin their studies in their Programmes from this University.
LUT operates 3 distinct schools, LUT School of Energy Systems, LUT School of Engineering Science and LUT School of Business and Management and 3 different research centres, viz. Centre for Separation Technology (CST), Carelian Drives and Motor Centre (CDMC) and Centre of Computational Engineering and Integrated Design [CEID]. Their focus on research is reflected in their many research Platforms
- REFLEX - Recycling carbon in a flexible competitive energy system.
- RED - Revealing emission discrepancies.
- RE-SOURCE - Resource efficient production processes and value chains.
- SAWE - Safe water for all.
- DIGI-USER - Smart services for digitalisation.
- SIM - Sustainable product processes through simulation.
The current challenges related to curbing climate change, availability of clean water and the continuous availability of energy are the challenging priorities that are embodied in the technology and business solutions LUT produces.
In 2019, LUT’s trail-blazing operations embarked on their ambitious journey of making both its campuses carbon negative by 2024. They plan to achieve this by delineating the carbon balance of all their activities over the next 5 years, by using the exclusive data platform that they built for accurate data collection and data mining.
