Southern Denmark University [SDU]
Since its humble inception in Odense in September 1966 as a stand-alone university, Southern Denmark University [SDU] has creditable accomplishments, expanding to 6 more campuses across the country. The University has been consistently ranked as among the top 50 universities in the world by both the ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings of the Top 100 Universities Under 50, and the ‘QS World University Rankings of the Top 50 Universities Under 50’. SDU’s top rankings attract a great lot of International students.
The university has partnered with the Universities of Flensburg and Kiel to offer a number of joint programmes. Widespread cooperation with regional industries and the international scientific community has been one of the main strengths of the University, the driving force for establishing international standards in the field of education and research.
SDU has a reputation of conducting internationally acclaimed research. Odense is home to the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute for Production Technology, where robot technology is one of the many research areas. Mads Clausen Institute in Sønderborg is engaged in the design and development of software for integration in the intelligent products of the future.
Funding from Kompan and Lego has enabled SDU to set-up a research unit for the investigation of child behaviour and development. SDU also hosts the Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS), which offers an interdisciplinary platform for fundamental research and intellectual inquiry and attracts outstanding researchers in large numbers.
As a national institute of repute, the SDU comprises five faculties, viz. Humanities, Science, Engineering, Social Sciences and Health Sciences totalling 35 departments, 30 research centers, 1,200 researchers and a well-equipped university library. SDU has about 32,000 students, with more than 15% of them being from other countries. SDU employs more than 4000 staff members spread out in its 6 campuses, the main one in Odense and the regional campuses in Slagelse, Kolding, Esbjerg, Sønderborg and Copenhagen.
SDU is the only university in Scandinavia that offers a degree programme in chiropractic studies (Clinical Biomechanics).
