The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore) founded in 1175 is one of the oldest universities in the world, considered the best in Italy for teaching and research. The university that started with just a School of Law in 1175, expanded to other disciplines like medicine and surgery, pharmacy, and mathematical, physical, and natural sciences in 1772 when the University received an imperial charter from Duke Francis II. Since then the University has not looked back.
Unimore established the Departments of Economics and Engineering between the 1960and 1980 and today, it boasts of a student strength of over 27,000 with more than 3,500 postgraduates and 1,200 international students. UNIMORE’s University Language Centre provides free personalized language assistance in Italian language to these International students, with the help of experienced tutors and through satellite television, multimedia computers, CALL facilities, electronic resources, e-journals, etc.). Unimore’s international exchange agreements and cooperation programs with more than 300 universities gives ample opportunities to its students to actively interact in a globalized world, with these 2 cities having more than 6% foreign students. The University is known to offer facilities and services worthy of international standards.
Located in the cities of Modena and Reggio Emilia between Italy's Eastern and Western coasts on the Mediterranean Sea, Unimore is well connected to major cities of Italy, with the nearest International airport just 40 minutes away in the city of Bologna. Both these cities have a claim to highest quality of living standards in Italy and are considered important cities of art and culture, with some of their sites being on the list of UNESCO's World Heritage sites. Apart from this, UNIMORE is located amidst the world-renowned brands of Ferrari and Maserati, known for production of mechanical parts, engines and sports cars. Unimore is ranked 2nd among public universities and among the top 8 medium-sized Italian universities by the Times Higher Education Ranking 2011-2012. UNIMORE is also ranked among the top 8 universities in Italy for its high level of research, according to the most recent independent research assessment sponsored by the Italian Government (MIUR-CIVR). UNIMORE has a reputation of developing employability skills of the highest order with its job-oriented training programs before graduation, made possible by its longstanding relationship with the area's business sector that supports the university’s research. Employability of its students post completion of their graduate studies is on par with other Universities in Italy. Of late, Unimore has started its 1st doctoral course in Industrial Research in Human sciences.
