Frequently Asked Questions Study in Sweden

Sweden no longer provides free education to international students. Swedish universities moved to paid education system from the year 2011. After the introduction of tuition fee Swedish universities provide scholarships or tuition fee waivers which cover 10% -100% of the tuition fee. These are awarded purely on the basis of merit.

Yes, Swedish universities provide exemption from IELTS / TOEFL for majority of the master programs and it is based on the factors that previous bachelors and 12th standard education is in English medium. Some specific programs may require the students to submit an English language test score during the application assessment.
GRE is not required for admission in Sweden. But having a good GRE score may strengthen your profile in case you are applying for any popular programs at top ranked universities.
To apply for Bachelor programs in Sweden students need to have their final 12th standard certificate. Along with this all the other application documents need to be submitted like 10th marks sheet, passport, resume, letter of motivation etc.
Students with just 3 years degree like B.com, BBA, BBM are not eligible to apply for Masters in Sweden. Students should have minimum of 4 years of education after 12th standard to be eligible to apply for master programs in Sweden. Pursuing students who are in their final year (4th year) of Bachelor’s degree can apply for Master programs in Sweden. The 4th year marks sheets are not required at the time of the application.
PhD in Sweden is a job and not an academic program. Students need to look for any available vacancy and apply for the PhD. The requirements to get into the PhD programs are very high and it is suggested to apply for 1 year master programs to get accustomed to the high-quality research at Swedish universities to increase your chances to move toward a PhD. Most universities also prefer to recruit students for their PhD openings from their master’s students.
Students are provided with a one year stay back visa after completing their masters and will receive a two years’ work permit on receiving offer letter from a company. Most of the students start applying for internships and jobs from the start of their second year of master’s program.
International students are allowed to apply for a maximum of 4 programs in Sweden and therefore it becomes even more important to shortlist the programs carefully. The admissions depend on meeting the admission criteria and also the merit of the student’s profile when compared with other students for admission.
90% of the population in Sweden speak English. English is also taught as the 2nd language in Swedish schools. Most of the companies in Sweden also operate in English. You can get by easily using English in Sweden.
Indian students can bring family members (spouse and children) on a dependent visa if they can demonstrate sufficient financial means to support them. Dependent visas are a time-consuming process and involves an interview with the Embassy. The dependent visa is awarded only if the Embassy is satisfied with the documents provided and the answers given in the interview.
